Resident Artist Position

Natchez Clay offers a Resident Artist position. This is a two-year commitment which allows the graduate to develop his/her voice in clay and build a portfolio should they desire to pursue grad school. This non-paid position offers the Resident materials, equipment and firing capability as well as an opportunity to work in a great environment with a friendly group of potters who love to share and learn from each other. In exchange the Resident Artist is required to teach classes, assist at workshops, load and fire kilns and help manage the studio.

We accept applications for this position year round, but interviews will not be conducted until spring of 2011 (and every two years following).

Resident Benefits:

  • Access to a private studio space (with wheel, table, ware racks etc).
  • Use of all studio facilities (pugmill, spray booth, slab roller, etc.)
  • A materials and firing allowance - Natchez Clay uses the best raw materials and clay and uses a Geil downdraft kiln and L&L electric kiln.
  • Participation in any class and workshop that occurs during residency.
  • A working knowledge of how a studio operates by actually participating in the operation.
  • Mentoring with Co-Owner and Administrator (individual time - weekly) on topics including operations, management and administrative topics (learning how a studio really works.)
  • Experience working in a community studio environment.
  • Teaching experience with adults, children and special needs individuals.
  • Opportunity to teach private lessons (RA receives full fee)
  • Opportunity to sell your work at our annual events, in our studio gallery and other locations throughout the area.
  • Opportunity to experiment with glaze mixing (we have a large supply of glaze chemicals)
Resident Responsibilities:
  • Maintain studio operations - to keep the studio organized, neat and clean.
  • Materials and equipment inventory and maintenance - manage clay, raw material and tool inventory, mix glazes, etc.
  • Facility operations - work studio on specified days.
  • Class instruction (at least one class per session). Assist instructors at other classes.
  • Kiln - manage and maintain kilns and glazes, including scheduling, loading, firing and unloading bisque and glaze firings in Geil and L&L kilns.

Internships

Intern positions are available for college students majoring in an art-related field. Interns act as assistants to the Resident and are given clay and a firing package in exchange for their services during the summer break. Please contact us if you are interested in a summer internship.
